Dental Veneers

Close up 3D rendering of a thin porcelain veneer being applied to a toothDental veneers are thin covers or caps, which are placed on your teeth. They are used for a variety of reasons, but they most commonly can be used to hide decay, cracks, or chips on highly visible front teeth, giving you more confidence in your smile. They are also used to fix gaps or uneven spaces between teeth. Veneers are custom made and permanent, so once they are placed and bonded to your teeth, they cannot be removed. If you are interested in finding out more about veneers and how they can help your smile, give us a call today at Bravo Smile and let us help you explore your options.

Is a Veneer Just Like a Crown?

Veneers and crowns are very similar, except crowns are used on the tops of your teeth, where chewing and biting happens, where veneers are used on the front of your teeth and are more for cosmetic purposes. Veneers are made from porcelain or a composite resin. If the veneers are made from composite resin, they can be built directly on to the tooth, or created from impressions in a lab and then returned to our office.

Porcelain veneers must be created in a lab from impressions and then returned to us. However, if that is the route you take to get your veneers, just like with a crown you may be given temporary veneers until your permanent ones arrive. You may have to have a small amount of enamel taken from your tooth before the veneer is placed, but our team will make sure to take as little enamel as possible to maintain the integrity of your natural teeth.

Am I a Candidate for Veneers?

If you are interested in using veneers to correct your smile, then there are a few things you should know beforehand. Veneers are not made for pressure, and therefore if you clench or grind your teeth often, then they may not be a good choice for you. A mouthguard can help protect them, however. Also, your teeth and gums must be healthy before veneers can be placed. If you have your veneers for many years, they may eventually need to be replaced, and a new set will need to be made. However, great oral care will help your veneers last for a very long time.

There are things to pay attention to after your veneers are placed as well. Like with dental bonding, veneers can crack or break against hard surfaces, so you may want to avoid certain foods like hard candy or chewing on hard things like your fingernails or pencils. Your new set of veneers may feel strange in your mouth for a short while after they are placed, however, the veneers should not affect your bite. Also, it is especially important that you keep up a great oral health routine after you get veneers. The better you take care of them, the longer they will last.
