Dentistry for Kids

Young boy patiently keeping his mouth open while his female dental assistant applies fluorideDental care for children is just as important as dental care for adults. As soon as your child starts to grow those tiny baby pearly whites, they can start to build up with bacteria and plaque. If not carefully removed, this buildup can start to lead to serious problems. The American Dental Association (ADA) strongly recommends that children schedule their first dental appointment around six months after they first start breaking teeth, or around the age of one year. This will help get your child established with a dentist and get them used to the process, as well as allow a dentist to see if your child is having any early oral health issues and if their baby teeth are developing correctly. At our caring offices of Bravo Smile we can give your child a great dental experience every time.

What Will My Child’s Dental Visit Entail?

If this is your child’s first visit to our office, expect to spend a half-hour to an hour at the office. A dentist or dental hygienist will ask you many questions about your child’s habits such as drinking and eating, pacifier or bottle use, and how their teeth are being cleaned at home. Your child will likely get a cleaning with a child’s toothbrush or a cloth, and the dentist or hygienist will examine your child’s teeth and the inside of their mouth for any possible issues. Your child may be scared of this first visit, but you will likely be allowed to keep them on your lap for the duration of the examination to make them more comfortable.

There are also some things you can do to help your child with the fear and discomfort of their first dental visit, and any visits after. You might take your child’s favorite stuffed toy for them to hold. Make sure you are calm and happy and talk to them throughout the process. Starting your child early and continuing with regular dental visits can help give them confidence in taking care of themselves and instill the necessity of good oral care without a fight.

If this is a routine checkup for your child, it will go much the same as an adult visit. Depending on the age of your child and the necessity, x-rays may or may not be taken. Your child’s mouth will be examined, and questions will be asked about their overall habits relating to oral health. Our dentists will check for cavities or other defects and recommend treatment, as necessary. Your child’s teeth will be given a thorough cleaning, and the dentist will assess the need for fluoride.
